Pennyghael Post Office and Model T Ford
Photo: Bertie Black © PPHA
Hugh Lamont and Nora Turner (PO assistant to Mrs Stoddart) stand outside the original Post Office at Pennyghael (now called Smiddy House) with one of the earliest motorised Hackney Carriages in South Mull – an original Model T Ford. Note the left hand drive, it was an authentic US export to the UK. Hugh Lamont bought it from Messrs. George and Jobling, Motor Agents of Glasgow in the early '20s. The car jack was under the front axle (but where was the spare wheel?) These wheels were wooden-spoked. The headlights were "electric", but the sidelights were acetylene burners.
